Career Plus Program

Career Plus is a program that was designed to assist at-risk students who have fallen behind in credits attain the necessary criteria to graduate from high school, with the added benefit of completing a technical program. The following criterion describes an appropriate candidate and the process to be followed for a student to be admitted to the Career Plus Program:

1. Student has fallen behind in credits, probably has attempted and failed 9th grade required courses.
2. Student does not have a special education label, and does not qualify for such.
3. Student may have had an attendance issue.

Having met the above criteria, the high school counselor or administrator may consider the student a possible candidate for the program. If so, he/she will contact the assistant principal at Carver and discuss the student. Student's grades, transcripts, attendance, and discipline records will be faxed to the assistant principal, and the high school counselor will advise the parent or guardian of the student to contact Carver's assistant principal to arrange an interview.

The parent and student will meet with the assistant principal at Carver and a determination will be made at that time. If the student is admitted to the program, the high school will be notified. The student will remain on the roll of the home high school, and have the opportunity to attend school activities including graduation, prom, etc.

At the end of each grading period, Carver's SAT will review each Career Plus student. If it is determined that a student is in violation of his/her agreement with Carver, the student may be returned to the home high school. In that case, the school will have the opportunity to fill that open position with another appropriate student.

Each of Carver's four feeder high schools have a specific number of allotted slots for this program. It is based on the population of the high school, and the Career Plus Program is staffed only to the maximum fulfillment of these spaces.

We are very proud of Career Plus, and the students who join the program. It is gratifying to see them develop as students, attain skills in a vocational/technical program, and to graduate from high school. Many of our former students keep in touch and it is always a pleasure to learn of their continuing education and career choices.

NOTE: It has been noted that students who do NOT have a lengthy list of disciplinary infractions, particularly insubordination type issues, are the most successful in the program and allow the learning process for the others to be optimal.
