Clubs of Carver Career and Technical Center

In 1984 C. Allen Powell and Jon H. Poteat launched the National Technical Honor Society from H. B. Swofford Career Center in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The mission of the organization is to honor student achievement and leadership, promote educational excellence, and enhance career opportunities for the NTHS membership. The vision is to be the leader in providing recognition for excellence in career and technical education and creating significant occupational opportunities for America's top workforce education students. At Carver Career Center, we are proud of the students who maintain the high standards required for membership in this elite organization. The students must achieve the following:

1. A candidate must have spent at least one full semester in a Carver program.
2. No student with more than 5 days absence per semester will be considered.
3. Students must have no less than a 3.5 grade point average in the field of vocational-technical study.

Secondary students must have no less than 2.5 grade point average at their home school in grades 9 through present.

SkillsUSA

The motto of the Skills USA organization is “Preparing for leadership in the world of work”. At Carver, we believe this to be our motto and our mission. As students are preparing for careers, membership20in Skills USA gives them the opportunity to develop standards, values, and leadership skills vital to success in the world of work.

Skills USA is an organization for trade, industrial, and technical students. Each chapter chooses, plans, and conducts their own activities. Skills USA emphasizes social and leadership abilities as well as occupational skills. This organization prepares students for life. It brings people together who share common interests and allows them to share ideas. It helps to broaden perspectives through joint activities of chapters and states.

Skills USA instills spirit and a desire to learn, to grow and to become a productive citizen. We believe that competition is a positive way to increase skill levels, and we are proud of the students who compete at Carver - first within the school, and then at the state level. For those who win first place in the West Virginia state level competition in April, the national competition is next and is held in Kansas City in June. FBLA

The Information and Office Technology students and the Legal Office Management Program students are all members of the National Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and Skills-USA.
Students compete in the spring in the in-house competition to decide what competitive event to enter on the state level. Students can choose from over 40 competitive and skills events from the areas of technology, public speaking, business, finance, and management. Students can finish as the very best in the nation, win recognition, scholarships, and cash from sponsored events. These are highly competitive events

This organization is a tremendous complement to a student's academic experience.

Students can attend a National Leadership Conference with approximately 6000 students. The energy felt there is always exciting. ( www.fbla.org )

HOSA

Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) is a National Student organization endorsed by the United States Department of Education and the Health Science Technology Education Division of ACTE. HOSA's two-fold mission is to promote career opportunities in the health care industry and to enhance the delivery of quality of care to all people. HOSA provides a unique program of leadership development, motivation, and recognition exclusively for secondary and post-secondary students.

Since its inception in 1976, HOSA as grown steadily reaching nearly 90,000 members in approximately 2,600 secondary and post-secondary chapters. Carver students enhance their learning experience with membership in HOSA. ( www.hosa.org )

FFA

The mission of FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. Students learn hands on skills for the ever changing plant and animal science industry.
This organization was founded in 1928 and currently has over 500,000 members. There are 7,358 chapters in all 50 states and the Virgin Islands.

Carver FFA students are active in public speaking contests, land judging contests, chapter dog grooming, educational trips, and many community service activities. We believe membership in the FFA is one more exceptional tool to be used in preparing our students for the future. ( www.ffa.com )
